Problem at the Park!

Problem at the Park is a lesson about taking turns and cooperation.  In this book, 2 cousins visit an amusement park together.  Mei and her cousin go on the swings, but he wants to go on the log ride. Mei takes her cousin on the car ride, but he still wants to go on the log ride.  Mei wants to go on the bumper boats, but her cousin speaks up...."It's not fair!" he cries.  He would like a turn on the log ride!. In the end, Mei and her cousin visit the log ride and have a blast!

KP1 & KP2 have been reading this story very carefully for the past 2 weeks. A good reader always thinks about a story and how they can relate it to their own life - making connections!

As I read, students were given a goal. Their reading goal was to listen carefully to the story and think about how the story reminded them of an event in their own life.

Their next task was to draw a picture of their connection.  They were encouraged to try their best to write words to go along with their picture, but (of course) Ms. Landry and Mrs. Bean were there to scribe for them and help record their thinking on paper.

What good writers do...

We have been spending a lot of time lately writing in our journals.  Students have been using this classroom anchorchart when writing.  It is really great to see students evaluate their own work and decide what they can add to take their work to another level!

Patiently waiting...

In the beginning of May the Kindergarten students recieved a special delivery in the mail....  CATERPILLARS (or larva - as some of us would say ;)!!!!!  We set up the larva in a quiet spot to observe.

While we were waiting for the caterpillars to make their change students spent time observing, writing down what they "see", what they "think" and what they "wonder".

It took about a weeks for the whole process to take place...here they are in all of their glory.  Six Chrysalis's.

Even sideways, Im sure you can see all the learing that is taking place.

It's time to transfer our chrysalis's to the butterfly house!

All set up with plants, sticks, and o.j.

...and now, we wait!

Our classroom garden

We chose beans, peas, and peas to grow in our garden. Student's helped plant seeds and made sure we gave plenty of water.

Look at it now!!!  We have plants sprouting!  Won't be long...maybe we will get to taste some of our crop :)

Education Week ~ May 5-9

Every year at the beginning of May the Catholic School Board celebrates Catholic education.  During this week, Corpus Christi had many spirit building activities and other class specific activites taking place.

On Monday May 5th, students and staff came to school dressed as their favourite book characters.  Mrs. Bean appeared and the coconut tree from Chicka Chicka Boom Boom while Ms. Landry was the Paper Bag Princess (sadly I have no photos!!).  Pink-a-licious, Skippy Jon Jones, a Jedi and a couple of ballerinas are some of the characters we saw that day!  Way to go Kinders!

On Tuesday, Corpus started the day with the Muffin Breakfast.  It was lovely to spend the morning casually chatting with parents and students while enjoying some yummy snacks.

Tuesday was also an exciting day just for Kindergarten as each class participated in a Scientists in the Schools Program - WHERE EVERYONE CAN BE A SCIENTIST!

Scientist Cindy joined us and introduced us to the kinds of Science we would be exploring. Her BIG message was that everyone and anyone could be a scientist - regardless of how old they were.  She showed a picture of a women who was 104 years old who was still lecturing on Science!

We can be a CHEMIST! Scientist Christina (Brendan's mom) assisted at
  this station. :)

As a chemist students got to wear their own lab coats and goggles.

We got to create our own solutions!

We can be a PHYSICIST!  Scientist Alicia (Carter's mom) assisted at this station. Here students examined how various objects behaved in water.

Why do some things sink while others float?

AIR helps things float!!

We can scientists and study astronomy! Scientist Sarah (Alistair's mom) spoke to us about different constellations such as the Big and Little Dippers and the North Star.

Playing with the stars!

Looking for constellations.

We can be a Palaeontologists!! Scientist Marge (Ava's mom) and Scientist Emma (Mia's mom) assited at the busy station.
